Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about transit astrology and how to use this site.

Is this site free to use?

Yes. The transit calculator, all transit interpretation pages, all educational content and all tools on this site are completely free with no sign-up required.

Do transits cause events?

Transit astrology describes correlations between planetary cycles and human experience, not causal mechanisms. Transits identify themes, developmental pressures and timing patterns. Whether you understand the correlation as causal, symbolic or coincidental is a personal philosophical choice. The practical value of transit work lies in pattern recognition regardless of the underlying mechanism.

What is a natal chart?

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon and all planets in the zodiac signs they occupied, along with the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant and IC) determined by your birth time and location. Your natal chart never changes - it is a fixed blueprint. Transits are the movements of the planets today as they form aspects to those fixed natal positions.

How often should I check my transits?

Outer planet transits change slowly, so checking once a month is usually sufficient for tracking the major themes in your life. Inner planet transits shift daily, so those are worth checking more frequently if you are interested in the day-to-day texture of astrological weather. There is no correct frequency - some people check weekly, others only when they sense a shift and want to understand it.

What is the difference between a transit and a natal aspect?

A natal aspect is a permanent angle between two planets in your birth chart. It describes a lifelong dynamic in your personality or experience. A transit is a temporary angle formed between a moving planet in the sky today and one of your natal positions. Natal aspects are who you are. Transits are what you are going through at a particular time. Both are read using the same five major aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition) but they operate on very different timescales.

Can two people experience the same transit differently?

Absolutely. Even when two people have the same natal planet at the same degree and receive the same transit, their experience will differ based on the rest of their chart, their life circumstances and their level of self-awareness. The natal chart provides context for how a transit is received. A Saturn transit to natal Venus will feel different for someone with Venus in Aries than for someone with Venus in Capricorn, and different again depending on what natal aspects Venus makes in each chart.

What are planetary returns?

A planetary return occurs when a transiting planet comes back to the exact zodiac position it occupied in your natal chart. The most well-known is the Saturn return, which happens around ages 29-30 and again around 58-59. Jupiter returns occur roughly every 12 years. Each return marks the beginning of a new cycle for that planet's themes in your life. You can explore Saturn Return, Jupiter Return, Uranus Opposition and Pluto Square Pluto in the special topics section.

What are the four angles in a birth chart?

The four angles are the Ascendant (rising sign), Midheaven (MC), Descendant and IC. They are calculated from your exact birth time and location, making them the most personal points in your chart. Transits to the angles often correspond with visible life changes in identity, career, relationships and home life. All four are included as natal points in the calculator. If your birth time is unknown, the angles will be approximate but all planetary positions remain accurate.

How do retrograde transits differ from direct transits?

When a planet retrogrades over a natal point, the transit happens in three passes: the first direct pass introduces the theme, the retrograde pass deepens or revisits it, and the final direct pass brings resolution or integration. This triple-pass pattern means retrograde transits often correspond with longer, more thorough processes of change. You can learn more on the retrograde transits page.
